A bus carrying a group of German tourists rear-ended a container truck and erupted into flames on an expressway that links Beijing and Tianjin, at around 8:30 a.m. on Monday that marks China’s National Day seeing a huge number of travellers on roads.
5 German passengers and 1 Chinese driver died and 14 others were injured, after the fire engulfed the bus and left it with a charred skeleton of metal, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Police said the Beijing-based China Youth Travel Service arranged the tour group. But the names of the dead have not yet been released.
The 14 people injured, 12 Germans and 2 Chinese, were sent to the local hosptial in Wuqing District of Tianjin, but the three more serious cases, all German nationals, have been transferred to Tianjin Municipal People’s Hospital and the First Hospital in the city center for treatment.
The German Ambassador to China, Michael Schaefer, went to Tianjin Monday afternoon to visit the injured.
