Following illegation detention of Hong Kong activists on Diaoyu Islands by Japan on August 16, Beijing residents held up anti-Japan rallies outside Japanese embassy in Beijing on August 16 and 17 to demand an immediate release of detained Chinese nationals and call Japan to get out of Diaoyu Islands.
During demonstrations, China’s national flags and banners with slogans such as “Declare war against Japan” and “Overthrow Japanese imperialism” were unfurled by protesters, as police carefully marshalled them. Some angry protesters were even seen throwing eggs, bottles of water, and traffic cones to the Japanese embassy.
Tolerated by the authorities, such anti-Japanese protests had rumbled on in other cities of China too. But the atmosphere was mixed with a sentiment that targeted against the Party as well, as the Party was seen weak enough to cope with the matter.
