Microphone gaffe puts CCTV newscaster under fire

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 11:35 PM PDT

CCTV commentator Zhang Mengmeng (张萌萌) is put under fire and earns a name Dirty Mouth, after making anti-homosexual comments on Olympic divers on the air during the live broadcasting of the men’s 10m platform diving final at London Olympics on August 11.

Apparently, Zhang was unaware that her microphone was still on, when chatting with another newscaster Hu Jia in private.

She was overheard, “I presume Daley doesn't stand a chance” when the scene was cut to the British diving star standing on the platform.

And when the American diver David Boudia came to the camera, she added, “All of them are perverts. They’re either from single-parent families or something else.”

The latter comment “something else” was believed to hint that some male divers are gay.

Tom Daley’s father Robert has died following a battle with brain cancer at 40 in May 2011, while Australian diver Matthew Mitcham publicly announced that he was a gay man in 2008.

Chinese public lashed the State TV commentator, who is a former national synchronized swimming athlete and national referee for swimming, gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics, for “lacking professional ethics” as soon as the gaffe went uncontrollable online.

Instead of making an apology then, Zhang however went to her Sina Weibo to complain that she was set up by the director.

Man seriously scalded in sidewalk collapse in northeast China

August 14, a man suffered over 65 percent burns over his body surface, after a sidewalk collasped sending him to a pit with boiling water in Dalian city, northeast China’s Liaoning province.

The similar mishap ever occurred in this Apil in Beijing where a 28-year-old woman died after fatally scalded in sidewalk collapse too.

According to eye-witnesses, when the man was pulled out from the pit by a passer-by, he still had consciousness and could talk.

He is now out of danger after rushing to a nearby hospital.

Local police has cordoned off the site, and started investigation into the case. But hot water leaked from an underground thermal pipeline could be the culpit again for the accident.
