A bus driver who gave his own life to save 24 passengers after being fatally hit by a piece of iron smashing through the bus windscreen was praised as a hero by the public.
The incident occurred at noon on May 29, when the driver, Wu Bin (吴斌), 48, was driving the bus carrying 24 passengers from Wuxi, Jiangsu to Hangzhou, Zhejiang.
All of a sudden, a metal debris (which later was believed to be from a speeding truck on the other side of the road) flew towards Wu’s bus and pierced through its windscreen to strike Wu badly.
Despite in great pain, Wu Bin managed to stop the bus, put on the parking brake, and turn on the hazard lights. He also struggled to stand up from his seat to advise passengers to call police and remain seated as the bus was still on the highway.
All the 24 passengers were saved unharmed, while the hero died in the early morning of June 1 from the injury that had damaged his liver, lung and three of ribs.
The surveillance video footage from the bus captured the moment. The video has widespread on the Internet and moved all netizens.
